On the '81, the spare tire carrier is mainly plastic, with a couple of steel "straps" across it. The finish of the plastic now varies due to age, ground in oil, dirt, etc. I tried cleaning up with Dawn, water, and a scrub brush, but still the finish is far from being either uniformly smooth/satin or black. Any suggestions for how best to restore such a plastic part. I don't want to paint it, as that is far from original...

Re: 81 - Restoring Plastic Spare Tire Carrier
We all deal with the factors of age/deterioration.... I'd suggest you do the best you can and let it go there. An obviously 'foreign' coating of this/that on a particular part will subject the item to a 20% originality deduction based on deviation from factory original FINISH.
Often, you'll find judges (your fellow NCRS members) tend to develop 'tears' that temporarily obscure their vision when they see an untouched factory original this/that which has been 'undinked' with vs. the routine service replacement/reproduction part that's fresh as a baby's bottom. In such cases, senior judges have been known to wipe the tears from their eyes and simply make a NOTE on the score sheet regarding Condition vs. extracting point deduction penalties....- Top
