    C2 Cowl "dimple"

I seem to remember some discussion in past posts regarding a "dimple" of some sort on the front cowl ledge, about 16 cowl/plenum grille slots in from the driver's side end. This was represented as a sure way to tell if a car was original and had not had a new front clip during its lifetime. Is there anything to this? I did an archive search but couldn't find anything. Thanks!

I think it is on the 13th slot. I can check for you tonight. It is used more of an indicator as to whether or not the car has been repainted, not necessarily whether it has a new front clip. The dimple is usually sanded off during the paint prep work. Again - not an indicator of body damage or replaced clip.

      Don,

It's real. It's about 1/8" in daimeter and in the fiberglass from the original mold. It's only on the left side of the car. Problem is, any "tuned-in" body man/painter today will add a drop of resin to new glass parts before painting to duplicate the bump and make it look original.

          Mike,

Your absolutely right. I just looked at the 66 and that bump really does look like a small drop of paint under the primer. That wouldn't be difficult to duplicate. Bet the original glass weeve and texture would be tho, if it were sanded off. I think I spent about 8 hours stripping just that channel on the car so the texture in the glass stayed the way it should be. I also have to wonder why we go to these extremes to save something like that. Must be the love for these cars, right? My girlfriend thought I needed psychiatric help when I showed her the grain in the raw glass channel.

Not a dimple, It rises above the surface.....

originals are cone shape, as tall as they are are wide.

The one on my car isn't cone shaped. It looks like a drop of resin and it's rounded on top. It's about 1/3 as high as it is wide. Every one I've seen is just about exactly this way.

                  Mike,

Maybe we should see if we can get that added to the judging sheet. "pauple on left hood ledge". Sounds like a little animal.

Very interesting discussion. I never fail to learn something new from this board evry time I read. Is there any chance of someone posting a picture of this dimple? Thanks in advance.

                        Bill,

I'll see if I can get a decent pic of the dimple, or whatever it's called. May be difficult because it now has a few coats of paint but I'll give it a try.
