      Joe:
If you have the radio out of the car and can find the original part number, you can go to some larger public libraries and get Sam's Photo Facts. these are complete schematics of thosands of electronic devices dating back to the 40's. I have done this with other Delco radio's and found them. I even have a few of them at home (not yours, unfortunately). hope this helps.

Joe - I've got what you need, too. If you can't get it from these other gentlemen, ask me.

          Tom:

Unit is Delco Model 986281, Serial 81F6B - 7444. Output transistor OK. Works OK. Need info on circuit board to case ground.

            Re: Radio Schematic

Documentation on radios was supplied by Delco Remy. The publication RS-42 for 1964 provides full schematics, parts lists and tech alignment proceedures for all 1964 Chevy radios as well as the Guide-Matic Headlamp Control option for passenger cars. You find these books at swap meets and when they come up for resale on eBay. There were also service bulletins providing running change improvements for a given radio issued to authorized Delco radio repair shops.

Absent a copy of this book, you can get 3rd party service information that was obtained via reverse engineering from HW Sams (Indianapolis, IN) in their PhotoFact publication series. As previously mentioned, you can often find the 'Sams' book in public librarys.

The original Delco/Chevy service book is about 75 pages long--a bit difficult to copy. The Sams publications offer some superior information like test/probe point voltage/waveforms and parts tables that list generic 3rd party components in addition to the original Delco part numbers (when there was an open market substitute component), most of which have been discontinued.

              Joe,

Try www.justradios.com, Dave Cantelon, 42 Clematis Road, North York, Ontario, Canada, M2J 4X2, (416) 502-9128. I have a 10 page service manual w/part #s and schematic for my 67 radio 986281 from him, cost was $5 plus postage.

Some time ago, I overhauled my non-functioning AM/FM, replacing the main transistor, and the volume control. I found a replacement transistor from the Radio Shack website; I'll have to dig into my records for the volume control but it was expensive. The radio now sounds brand new.

If you are doing the same thing with your radio, e-mail me and I'll give you some help.

The radio is out or the car and on the bench. It now is working fine. I suspect that I had a short to the output transistor/heat sink in the back of the unit. I'll be a lot more careful when I reinstall, making sure to keep the area clear. As of now, I think I am AOK, but if I have further problems after reinstallation, I'll call on your expertise.
                Thank you all again.

                  Joe,

If you've got it out of the car, put in an new speaker, an original one with the little transformer which is matched to the radio output. I know it's a real pain to work under the dash, but once you are there, you might as well do it right. If you are getting static at various volumes, it is the volume/tone control, I tried cleaning mine many times until I gave up and replaced it.
A new main transister will do wonders; they get subject to heat effects over the years.

                  Good luck,

                    Jerry:

Good advice on the speaker. I installed a matched unit with the transformer last year during restoration, replacing a speaker without the transformer. My volume control is noise free, so probably clean. I had adjusted, cleaned and lubed all last year. Thanks again
