    C2 - What are P. Washers?

    Members,
From time to time, I come across a reference in the '65 AIM to P. Washer.

I know that F. stands for flat and L. stands for lock; but what the heck is a P. Washer?

    Thanks,
    Gene

      Gene,

If I remember correctly, GM used P for plain washer and L for lock washer.

Duke, that's what I always thought from comparing the actual parts to the AIM..."P" = plain. But if "F" = flat (don't ever remember seeing F in 70 AIM), then that gives them two different names for the same part, and that's highly unlike the General.

I think "F. Washer" could mean "fender washer"; i.e. big washer with a little hole in the center. Nah, those GM engineers would have another high-faluttin' name for an anachronisim like a "fender washer".

          Gents,
Seems to make sense, that P stands for Plain. Except, there are other places in the '65 AIM that specify F (for Flat) washers.

Perhaps somewhere along the line, the General changed the nomenclature from F washers to P washers. Just one of those mysteries, I guess.

          Regards,

            Gene,

I think you are correct. I do seem to remember the washer being called F or flat somewhere in the AIM. I suppose it may have something to do with the different engineering departments involved in the drawings and their different draftsmen.

In all of the "standard parts" books from GM, their refered to as flat washers but on most of the engineering drawings, their refered to as plain washers.

              Gene,

One other thing to watch out for is the L washer designation. This can mean external tooth or lock washer. Tim

                  Tracy,

I don't think so because that would only describe the plating and not the washer physical style. For that to work, it would have to be "P F Washer" for plated flat washer or "P L Washer" etc etc. I think it's just the difference between the people in parts group and the draftsman as far as the "noun description" of the fastener. When the part is assigned a part number, it automatically has a complete description which would include plating and material.
