    Power window rebuild - C2

I searched the archives without any real success on this. Both of my C2 convertible power window motors make abnormal noise so while I am replacing the door panels I will also take apart the mechanisms and work on the motors. I would appreciate any particular advice from those who have done this as to tips and procedures??

It looks like the motors are similar to the headlight motors, which I just finished rebuilding quite successfully. Don't know about the gearing or which parts typically require replacement versus simple cleaning and lubrication. Are the bearings prone to seizing in the motors as they are in the headlight motors?

i have done this several times. the problem always seems to be the old grease has turned to hard wax. the thing you have to be careful of is the coil helper spring. when you take the motor off the mechanism the spring must be held compressed. once the motor is off you can turn the gear using the window arm around >180 deg and that will take the pressure off the spring. i then clean out all the grease in the motor gear pocket(the gera just lifts out) and repack it with white lithium grease. you can also adjust the worm gear lash.

      Tim,

Maybe you should have a friend that has done this before come by and help you with the door mechanism. If you don't have a friend to help install a bolt in the scissor mechanism before you remove the motor. The spring loads the scissor mechanism and can be dangerous. I have a mark on my left index finger to remind me that Corvettes can hurt you.

Most of the time cleaning and lube will fix the problem. If you need parts you can contact Bair's at 1 800 421-9644.

      Regards,

      JR

OK, I have the mechanism out and the door all taken apart. Question is, does the motor come apart separately from the gear assm or should I leave that together? The motor is similar to that of the headlights, and in that case the motor comes apart by removing the long screws from the back. In this case however, the motor is coated with a black encapsulating compound that looks like taking it apart won't be quite so easy. What have you guys done?
