Re: PF 454
Part number and inventroy consolodation! The PF 454 is a new design with the latest in materials and pleating. It also has an anti-drain back valve, which is nice on applications where the filter is upside down relative to the installation in our old V-8s so oil doesn't drain back down to the sump, which increases the time to achieve proper oil pressure on startup.
One of the many newer applications for the PF 454 is the 8.1L medium duty truck engine. If it meets the warranty and service requirements for a commercial duty big block, it should be just fine for our vintage engines. There are many other applications, new and old, including replacement of all the old PF 25 applications.

I think that you mean that you went looking for a PF-25, not a PF-24. The PF-24 is still available and I don't think that it is used for any Chevrolet applications. The PF-454 replaces the PF-25, which is used for most Chevrolet V-8 applications (at least, until a few years ago). I believe that the PF-454 will function just fine for previous PF-25 applications. However, if you want more filtering capacity, then use a PF-1218. This filter replaces the old PF-35. I have used a PF-35 on my 69 since about the second or third oil change when the car was new. The PF-35 (and, the PF-1218) are LONGER than the PF-25. The PF-1218 and the PF-454 use the same filtering media, though; the PF-1218 just has more of it. Is that necessary? Probably not but it can't hurt. Plus, you get a little more total oil capacity in the engine with the longer filter.
There are filters available from AC which are even longer than the PF-1218 and will fit the Corevtte engine. However, I wouldn't use one. These filters may extend below the oil pan and, whether or not they do, represent a "vulnerability" as far as road debris impact damage is concerned. A sudden and catastrophic leak induced by such an impact can do a lot more damage than the benefit of the higher capacity filter. The PF-35 or 1218 is the longest filter I will use.
In the future I think that you will see even more oil filter part number "consolidation". I'm really surprised that it didn't happen a long time ago. I've just never understood why there had to be so many different oil filters. One factor influencing consolidation now, though, is the fact that DELPHI (the GM spin-off company that owns the AC spark plug operations including filters) wants to exit the "commodity" parts business, entirely. In the interim, I think that they're going to continue to reduce the plethora of oil filter part numbers and designs. There will always be AC-Delco oil filters (this is still GM's brand for high volume, aftermarket-like service parts), but, in the future, those filters may be manufactured by someone else (like Purolator, Allied-Signal, or Dana, assuming that Dana doesn't sell off its filter business, too).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: PF 454
Joe,
I assume (?) that the PF44 for the C5's is still available? I can't find any for Dad's 2002 anywhere in town. Granted, I may have to look elsewhere, but it seems surprising that AutoZone doesn't have them.

The PF-44 is discontinued. It is replaced by the PF-46 aka GM #88984215.
The "long version" of the PF-44, known as the PF-59, is still available, though. However, while I believe that this filter would be just fine for a C5, I wouldn't use it on a car under warranty. It might give them an "excuse" if something went wrong with the engine. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: PF 454
You mean I'm SOL finding an "original" filter for the C5? The factory one was unfortunately ruined when it was removed, and I've looked but not found one since last fall.
Any suggestions?

I'm sure that there are a lot of PF-44s still around. However, items like this will deplete stock quickly as dealers want to get rid of the old part number. Check with your local GM dealer. If they don't have it, have them do a parts search for other GM dealers in the area. I'll bet that some still have these in stock. The GM part # is 25010633.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
