    67 tank sticker

I just dropped the gas tank on my 67 coupe and the original tank sticker is still there, covered with dust, but amazingly well-preserved. Thanks to GM for putting a big glob of glue to hold it on since December 1966, but unfortunately, all that glue soaked through the sticker and make it somewhat illegible. The only options I can make out are M35 Automatic trans and QB1 Red stripe tires. I would like to remove the sticker and preserve it. Does anyone have any fool-proof method of removing a sticker, intact. It is extremely fragile and I don't want to do more damage than has already been done.
Thanks in advance for your help. Rex #8089

I used a new one sided razor in a holder and lubed the blade up with WD-40. Then I started very slowly to cut under the contact cement to free up the sticker. I had to dig deep into the zinc coating on the tank. I changed blades several times and it took a half hour, but as long as you dig under the contact cement, it should come off ok, see the front and rear pictures below; you can see silver slivers of the zinc coating from the tank in the red contact cement.

After I got it off, I dipped the sticker in distilled water with a Ph of 8.0 to neutralize the acidic condition, let it air dry flat in a low humidity room and encased it in Lexan. It can be done. PT

        Rex,

-------Consider another alternative, please. Buy yourself a reproduction tank and install it. The repros are of good quality and will be absolutely clean inside as an added bonus. This way you save the tank sticker on the original tank, and you are preserving what you have just the way GM did it in the first place. The other added bonus is that there is no chance of damaging your build sheet any further than it already is!..........Bill S

I took a picture of the tank sticker still on the tank, shown below. I also took several shots of the tank and sticker next to the rear license plate of my car with my business card on it. FWIW

Thanks everyone for the advice. Got my sticker off tonight, lots of glue on the backside that had soaked through and made much of the information unreadable. The M35 automatic and QB1 red stripe tire options are definitely legible as is the information at the top of the sticker. Now................., how is the best way to preserve the document...........................laminate it? Once this is done, it is certainly protected for a long time, but it also "sealed" forever, can't get it out of the laminating sheets. I am open to suggestions, and as always, thanks for your help. Rex, frame the sticker. Have the local framer use acid free paper, acid free plastic supports to hold it in place and a non glare glass.
