    '61 electrical problems

Just bought a '61... Having some electrical issues. From everything I've been told, it's all about grounds. If that's the case, I'm still looking.
--Headlights work with no instrument lights or tail lights...

--Turn signals work front and back and in dash. All bulbs are good.

    --No brake lights.

--I changed the associated fuses. The circuits for the brakelights and instrument panel are "still" dead at the fuse box...

    Am I missing something obvious?

Check the head light switch. They are prone to not working properly. That would probably solve your interior dash lights, and maybe the tail lights. The brake lights is a different matter, but then again it may be the brake light switch. Check the circuits by bypassing the switches to verify you are getting power to the lights. If you know you have power to the lights, then it is probably the switches. If you don't have power, then you need to trace back to where you do have power. I for the longest time used a jumper wire on my fuse panel to get my tailights and dash lights to work, only to find out the headlight switch was bad. Hope this helps.

Instrument light power comes from the HL switch. The rheostat may just be dirty and need to be cleaned with contact cleaner or the switch may have headed south. Loose wire also a possibility. As for the brake lights, check top see if you have power on one side of the switch and that the switch is actually making up.

There is an article in the April 04 issue of Corvette Enthusiast that covers troubleshooting this circuit pretty completely. If you don't have it, email me and I will send you the appropriate section via email.

Mark, I had same problem with 59 on tail lights. I removed fuse box from firewall under steering wheel and behind my fuse box moisture/water had rusted a terminal behind fuse box, I know these cars leak alot with the tops and the air cowl vent, best scott 40610
