On my 1958 Big brake fuelie, the engine suffix "CS" was handwritten before the orange paint was applied, I think, and through the years the orange paint fell off leaving the outline of the letters. If I were to put the letters back, what color should they be? Maybe white? Maybe green?

Re: C1 Bellhousing/Engine Suffix Handwritten Codes
Justin - While I don't know if this info will help or just confuse the situation but here it is. I just checked the bellhousing I saved from my '57 Chevy 210 hardtop coupe w/ Power Pack and overdrive. It has the engine suffix code on it and the crayon color looks to be a light yellow although it could have initially been white. It does not appear to be green. The bellhousing was painted about half way and quite uniformly and the writing is both on (under) the painted surface and on the unpainted surface. Hope this helps. Pete- Top

Re: C1 Bellhousing/Engine Suffix Handwritten Codes
Based on a 62 I had, I'd say the engine code was written in a white crayon. My 62 had the code written upside down in about 5" high letters in a light yellow. I think the color white had turned yellow with heat and age. I assume the intent of the code was to tell the assembler which crank and pistons to install. Just my speculation.- Top
