    '65 327/365 hp distributor mods

    Hello,
Is there any place in the Akron/Cleveland Ohio area that can recurve the advance on my distributor? I took it to a shop last week and the guy said he "can't get it to spark" (it has a Pertronix module in it), it sparked just fine when I removed it from the car. Will the module work on an old Sun machine? After finding out my distributor was not the original unit, I'm trying to put it back as close as I can to stock. The problem is it has way to much advance in it - I was told the slot in the cam plate is too long and I can't find an original cam plate for that application. Thanks.

One way to obtain the ability to recurve the distributor is to put points back in it, have the curve reworked and then drop the pertronics back into it. My Sun machine does not do electronic setups, althugh there is a module available that will do at least some of the OEM elcetronic distributors. I don't know if they will do a pertronics though. E mail me directly if I can help.

      Help!
I just got my distributor back from a guy that set it up on a machine and he claims he put 24 deg mechanical advance in it. He said he took some vacuum advance out of it? This doesn't make sense to me - the mechanical part should be responsible for advance when the vacuum canister is plugged right? Needless to say when I put the distributor in the car and set the initial timing at 12 deg, it advanced all the way too 46 deg at about 4000 rpm - this is not what I wanted it to do! Where did he get 24 deg? I'am very unhappy and would like to know if I can send this to some one to get it set up properly. Thanks.

When you checked it and got 46* @ 4,000 rpm with 12* initial, was your vacuum advance connected or disconnected?

            William:

I am sorry to hear that someone is trying to take advantage of you. Firstly, your vac advance can should read #236. Next, you should have a nylon bushing installed to limit total mech advance. This will be found under the advance cam of your distributor. If this part is missing, you will get an additional 5-7 degrees beyond specification. Keep us informed. If you can't solve, I'll fix it for you gratis.

I used the NAPA replacement vac can, don't know the number off of the top of my head. The bushing that came in the kit looks more like a rubber sleeve, so I used a thicker brass bushing that I had from a Moroso kit - not really much difference.

24* @ 2350 rpm is the correct spec for the L-76 centrifugal advance, but he appears to have put 34 degrees in it instead, and there's no need to "take some vacuum advance out". The original vacuum advance can added 15* @ 8" Hg., and those specs are duplicated by the Echlin #VC1810 can ($10 at NAPA). Looks like a trip back to (someone else's) Sun machine is in order.
