The gas tank on my 72 seems to be positioned wrong. The filler opening is not centered on the body opening, it is shifted significantly toward the rear of the body opening. I know that the gas tank was replaced with a GM tank 5 years ago. I don't know what the original tank looked like relative to the opening position.
When I had the body put back on my 69, I noticed that the tank was left of center. I loosened the straps and was able to shift it to the right. I am not sure how much forward backwards play the tank has but it is worth a shot to loosen the straps (You do not have to take them out) and see if you can move it forward. You may be able to shift it enough to get it aligned. Good luck.
