    Fit of new door panels??

I have a new pair of door panels from a well know supplier (name omitted until I talk to them and see what is up). I started test fitting them and discovered that there are several problems. I am wondering what the typical experience is from those of you who have replaced door panels regarding problems you have and how well they fit compared to the originals??

I have only tried the drivers side so far, but my new panels have two basic problems:

When installed and with the metal upper hooked over the fiberglass inner door panel and pushed down as far as it will go, it is still too high for the inside door release and door pull to fit properly. See attached photo. The upper photo is the new panel and the lower is the original. The attach fittings need to be where the they are on the original for the hardware to fit properly. The attach clips at the bottom don't quite fit right either.

Second problem: The curve of the upper part of the door panel is not as contoured as much as the original, and to get the metal upper to hook properly it pulls the fiberglass inward slightly creating an uneven gap for the window. When viewed from above, the opening for the window is not equal across the top. It is noticeably larger in the middle. In other words, the door panel where the whiskers are no longer follows the contour of the window itself or the outer door fiberglass.

I put the original panel back on the it fits like a glove and follows the contour perfectly.

Comments from your experiences? How well should I expect new panels to fit? If it weren't for the fit problems, these door panels look great!

I also forgot to mention one other symptom: I was going to transfer the racetrack trim from my old to new panels. I discovered that the holes in the upper metal support of the new panel where the tangs of the trim are supposed to go do not line up correctly with the slots in the front for the trim. I would have to drill new holes in the upper metal support for the racetrack trim tangs to go through. Is this abnormal to have to do that? I am beginning to think that the trim was not placed on the metal support correctly...

If those trim panels say "Corvette America" on the back, I've seen it all before; it doesn't take any more money to make injection molds correct than to make them wrong, but they chose to make them wrong, then assemble them wrong, etc. I haven't personally worked with the Al Knoch trim panels, but I understand they're better (they couldn't be any worse)

The Al Knoch panels fit on my 67 with no issues at all.

I have never put on a set of door panels that both sides fit right. I have moved many locks to fit. If you find ones that really both fit I will try that product. I think I have tried everybody who makes them and none fit on sharks. Lyle

I just installed a set of NOS door panels on my 66 Conv. and had some of the same issues described above. The lock stud had to be relocated to fit the hole in the door panel.

Even the original GM panels were not perfect or the GM Vettes were not perfect. Take your Vette and the door panels to an experienced interior person and they will know what to do.

If you will notice most door hardware has extra holes or elongated holes. This was done at the factory to allow for tolerances outside the norm.

Plasticars have a lot of tolerances outside the norm.

              Good luck,

              JR
