    1970 Brake light electrical Problem

The brake lights will operate okay, until the directional signal is turned on. The fuse will blow for the brake lights, but not for the directionals. The directionals will continue to work. Sometimes the fuse will hold for a few minutes if the directionals are switched on slowly. If the directionals are turned from one to other quickly the fuse will blow immediately.
I have looked for possible shorts and for poor grounding. I must be missing the problem, so any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I would look at the directional harness in the steering column.
