    Bob,
After reading the entire thread, the obvious question that comes to my mind is why reinvent the wheel? I think that you can still purchase speedo cable lube from GM. Or if not, any repair shop that does speedo work should be able to sell you a small amount that will solve your problem.

    Good luck,
    Gene

        Mike----

The valve cover retainers are painted engine orange EXCEPT for the part under the screw head. The part under the screw head is bare. I understand that there are quite a few judges out there with x-ray vision that can detect this with a resultant point deduction. This thing with judges with x-ray vision is getting to be a real problem. It's going to open up a whole new "can of worms" for restorers. Internal areas, once sacrosanct from the "prying eyes" of judges, are now "exposed".

One good thing, though, is that the "special talents" of these judges can be put to good use in a "peripheral sort of way". You can have them give you a "virtual colonoscopy" without having to suffer through the real thing.

Gene I agree, the GM stuff works great. It damps the cable to prevent needle bounce, and stays soft in lower temps to boot. In my opinion, the best way to go. As I recall, it is a blue paste grease....Craig

                Blue Grease...Another App?

Craig, thanks for the description of the blue paste grease. I was unfamiliar with GM's speedo grease product.

I found some dried up blue-looking material on my starter solenoid plunger which I assumed to be lubricant. I always wondered what the devil kind of lubricant was blue; I thought it might be a special grease for the electrical application.

However, I'll bet it's the same stuff as the speedo lube because the application is similar...some lubrication is desireable, low loads are involved, has sliding metal contact, and has to function over a wide temperature range.

Chuck, could be.....I do have blue grease though, and it is different than the spedo lube. I think my tub of blue grease is Kendall super lube or some such name, in a plastic gallon tub. I think the GM Spedo lube was some number like ST-800 but I may be way off on that...I suffer from senior moments.... Craig

This stuff had been in that starter solenoid since the car was new, and was somewhat "waxy" in consistency. I don't know if it started out like that, or if it had dried out to that condition over the years. Perhaps it wasn't the GM "approved" speedo lube, but another product altogether...something old, something blue.
