Carpeting underlayment

What underlayment is recomended for a 63 SWC ? The original carpeting had a horse hair type material under the carpet. The new carpet I have does not have any backing material to speak of. What should I use ? Is the foilbacked material,(for sound and heat barrier) which is available recomended ?

Originally, the carpet backing was jute and it was pre-cut. The purpose was twofold: (1) give soft/supple support to the carpet and (2) thwart highway surface reflected heat from penetrating the cockpit from the bottom of the car.

The catalog houses stock generic carpet backing kits which are pre-cut and install the same as factory original jute, but most are now made from modern materials (composite foam) vs. jute. Also, there are technically superior products available which are foam/foil based that do a much better job of reducing road surface-cockpit reflected heat transfer with a couple of caveats...

First, expect to pay more for the foam/foil systems (typically $200-400). Second, if the car is to be judged, expect the interior judges to lift the existing carpet at various places where the carpet is free to move to see if they can detect factory non-original underlayment and take appropriate point deductions.

The choice of what to do, which way to go is yours....
