Re: 63 F.I. Air Cleaner Question....

    Michael,

OK, if nobody wants to take a crack at this S-tube thing I'll wade out in the deep water.

Don't have an original or restored one at the moment but had SN 17573 in the garage several years ago. I also know where it sleeps and nobody has taken a wrench to it yet. You remember the AD Anderson White/Black small tanker.

The S-tube is dipped and here's my theory. Humidity and use of the paint have 100% to do with the gloss of the paint. Plants had no AC or controls on how parts were dryed. Air Drying is all there was so whatever the humidity was that day determined the gloss of the part. High humidity equaled dull black and low humidity equaled a higher gloss. Also, the use of the paint came into the scene. Older paint equaled a lower gloss also.

These dipped parts were on a conveyer and the conveyer allowed the parts to go down in the paint and then out again. Poor paint quality that produced runs, drips and errors. When they reached the end of the line they were dry, thrown in a box and shipped to GM. End of story!

    Regards,

    JR
