    1959 Exhaust System Pipe Clamps

I'm working with my exhaust sytem and want to use the right clamps. In the NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide it states, "Exhaust pipe hangers and clamping assemblies were bare metal (not plated), and U-bolts were machined with fine (5/16-24 threads".

    Two questions....

    1. What is the proper size of the clamps for the hangers and for the clamps holding the tail pipe?

    2. Are the only clamps requiring fine threads the ones on the hangers or are the clamps holding the tail pipes supposed to have fine threads as well?

    Thanks for your help!

Perry - I will comment that my belief is that all 1959 exhaust u-clamps were of the fine thread variety. The proper size clamp for any of the pipes would simply be the proper size for the pipe being hung/clamped/fastened. Best, DC

Does anyone know where I can purchase the fine threaded pipe clamps?

Oh Great Dipstick! Would it not be possible to run a 5/16 fine thread die over the coarse threads?

                    Dennis,

I sure don't know much about 53-62 but I have a clamp that I thought was correct for 58-62. I have no idea what the proper location is but it's a 3754883 clamp unit so it's probably for tailpipe. It's coarse thread.

The part number would not be in the AIM because it lists the clamp and U bolt separately under two different numbers but it is the same as the old 63 parts book. I can scan and post the pic if you think it might be the correct clamp. I should know better than get into 53-62 questions. Whole new world for me.

OK - What got me spooled up a few years back... I took my 58 apart and all the u bolts were fine threaded rascals. That got my attention. Then, finally, I got to study the AIM for a while. Noticed the universal joint nuts were the same part number as the exhaust u clamp nut. I knew the u joint nuts on solid axle cars were fine threaded guys - and with that, and what I was finding on this car tended to make me a believer about fine threaded exhaust u bolts. Be happy to listen to anyone elses war stories... Michael, thanks for your post, Best, Dennis

                            Dennis,

The SAE thread that you found at all locations must mean that the clamp that I have is incorrect. I assumed that because I found the number in an old 63 printing of the parts book, the part would be correct. It must be a service replacement instead of the original assy line installed part. Looks like I saved it all these years for nothing. Thanks,

                            Michael
