I just read this in Noland Adams Restoration guide and I quote, "Controversy contines on the correct air cleaner top cover finish. As far as can be determined, some air cleaner top lids were chrome plated, but most were painted black." He also states earlier that the early prototype 65' 396/425's had chrome air cleaner lids and valve covers.

I have seen one 396 that had a chrome lid that was painted black. As ratty as everything was I have no reason to believe that it was not original.

BTW, is the car in So Cal white with tan interior????

                Hi Dick,

The car is a black/black two-top vert that was a road race car its entire life. Just recently its had been turned to street duty. The orginal owner swapped out the 396 for a 427, but soon went back to the 396 as it "ran harder"!

The car has had some famous wheel men over the years including Elliot Forbes Robinson and was prepared by Dick Gulstrand.

It was on a website awhile back, I'll try to find the site again.

Below is the link to the car I mention. Of note, the current onwer painted the lid black before he realized that the chrome finish was probably original.

                        Chris,

------Not doubting you, but did Walt tell you that? Actually I never doubt any of the strange occurences that may have happened on the Corvette assembly line because it was pretty hectic in both Tonawanda and St.Louis.
------I have seen this car close up and love it and its history. The present owner seems to be committed to doing whats right for this particular car and I applaud him for it!!!!!!..........Bill S
