Re: best way to adjust rockers

Rather than make a mountain out of a molehill, why not just use the cold method in the Chevy service manuals? A half turn down from "zero lash" seems to be the prefered setting. I've used this method for years and it works very well. As they say in the book "no further adjustment is necessary".

You guys seem to go to a lot of work for this. I've always have found large pieces of cardboard worked well. Just stick it in the downhill side, bend up the ends at front and back, and let it go. It lasts more than long enough to adjust them running. If you have the cardboard high enough, nothing splashes over the top and you throw it away when done.

Some of those old Mickey Thompson valve covers can bring a good price with the nostalgia guys. But not with the tops cut off.

The technique of cutting the center out of an old valve cover works well. I pulled an ratty old steel valve cover off a donor from the salvage yard and performed this mod. Worked well but the edges of the cut steel were a bit sharp.

a better way is to use a round chassis punch and just put 8 round holes located above each adjustment nut.

Yes, that would be better (if I knew what a round chassis punch is ). Is that one of those round hole saws used in a drill similar to the doohickeys for installing door lock cylinders?

No, it looks like two sockets, one fitting in the other, with a bolt through both. Sharpen the open edges of the sockets like a pair of scissors, and you get the idea.

The chasis punch isn't a car chassis, but chassis like TV, radio, etc. for punching round small holes in thin sheetmetal.

Commonly called a "Greenlee Punch" - most industrial supply houses have them - McMaster-Carr, etc, and Eastwood sells them.

I made a set of these from old valve covers but I used 3/4 inch hole saw. There was an artical in the Restorer years ago with the dimensions for placing the holes. I usually put duct tape over the holes not being used. Works great!
