Re: 72 windshield sealer
John, you got me. I was thinking that the liquid sealant cartridges I had seen in 3M's catalog for "bonded glass" installation was butyl, but it's actually urethane; namely 3M "Windo-Weld" (051135-08607), or 3M Super Fast Urethane (051135-08609). These part numbers are from a nineties catalog, so don't bust my chops if the part numbers have been superceded by a new system.
It appears that 3M still made a one-part polysulfide adhesive sealant (051135-08606) as late as the mid-nineties, and noted that it was "ideal for providing a supplementary seal for windshields installed with Butyl Tape". They also make a 3M "Windo-Weld" Ribbon Sealer, which I suspect is butyl tape, and says it is "a 'tape-type' sealer used in the replacement of windshields and backlites on all 'gasketless' car models". No wonder glass shops were using the stuff...I guess 3M hadn't gotten the message on the specs in the nineties.
But, you're right, whatever specs are/are not met; the side glass (frames) on my SUV are installed with butyl tape, and while it is tough, I would never use it for a windshield...I'm not even sure I like it for the side glasses, but the sealant's adhesive grip is supplemented by an interior molding bead.
Ed said: "Where can I get the butyl type sealer that was used to seal the windshield header panel. I am talking about the putty like black stuff that is put between the top of the windshield frame and the stainless t-bar trim."
Regardless of what is used to install windshields, it was irrelevant to this thread...that is, unless Ed decides to install his new windshield himself (which I don't recommend) using my incorrect trivia explanation. He wanted to know what sealant was inside the frame; the closest equivalent in my opinion is 3M Strip-Calk (051135-08578), 60 one foot lengths per box, black.
