    Re: Original Corvette Documentation Coming

Maybe I missed something however in ANY of the information in ANY public domain concerning the " Chevrolet build" information that is/was to be provided by Jim Mattison's company/group, Corvette specifically was NEVER mentioned! Camaro, Chevelle, Nova YES, they were specifically mentioned. But never Corvette!

Is this discussion/subject of Corvette build information availability here because Jim or his company has publicly said the Corvette information was coming or just wishful thinking on the part of our hobby? Or is it because a Corvette is a Chevrolet just like the other models mentioned above?

Help me understand why everyone's panties are now in a wad when it comes to this often discussed subject? From what I have seen, there is no "new" information anywhere that the Corvette information actually exists. Please tell me I am wrong.

      Re: car shipper papers

      Clem,

I would like to see it if it isn't too much trouble, mostly wondering what type of info was on it.

      Thanks,

              Re: Original Corvette Documentation Coming

As originator of this thread I would like to clear up a few things:

              1. I meant no disrespect in the spelling of Jim's name. His name was mentioned to me by this Pontiac person in a phone call. This individual has a speech impediment, and it sounded like he said "Madison". Again, my apologies, no disrespect intnded.

              2. The person who received this information from Jim is very close personal friends of Jim Mattison , and spends a great deal of time with him. Art is correct in one sense, Jim works for Pontiac Historical Services, which is owned by a company called Automotive Services, Inc. They are unrelated to PMD.

              3. Apparently Jim has compiled Corvette info, but will not acknowledge or release any until all is either complete, or it becomes unobtainable. In which case none will be released.

              4. When (and if) Jim obtains a complete database, it will become announced and available with no advance fanfare. For obvious reasons.

I have a 63 SWC original fuelie with full doc's so I could care less either way. I just thought I wuld pass on this info from a source I trust completely.

                          John,

As a Canadian Forces member I ordered a new 1975 Firebird in July, 1974 through the Serviceman's Auto Club, basically a fleet purchase group run by retired military members. Cars were purchased through dealers in Toronto and had to be picked-up there regardless of where the purchased was stationed. Owing to my early order, and constant calls to check on its status, my Club rep soon tired of me pestering him and gave me some number codes to use on a touch tone phone and which would access a GM computer system. With an dealer code, an inquiry code, a security code and an order number, I was able to check as often as I wished on the progress of my car. One of the dates given was 'scheduled-Norwood, November 5th' and another was 'loaded...followed by a rail car number, Norwood, November 17th'. These messages were all computer-combined words spoken by a female voice. To my recollection, there were no further messages after the 'loaded' message and I took delivery on December 17th, 1974.

Interestingly enough, some twenty years later I found the scrap of paper with the numbers on it and tried the system...it still worked (even the security code hadn't been changed in 20 years!!!). A couple of trial and error guesses at possible order numbers resulted in a message on the status of a 1994 Firebird from the Ste Therese plant. Were you aware of this system during your years at GM?

Yes, that was the "status line"; dealers used to use it frequently, as they were only notified on paper once a week about the status of their outstanding orders in the days before computers were in widespread use. Today dealers just make a couple of mouse clicks and the computer system can tell them where a car is almost to its position on the assembly line. When I was the Viper Plant Manager, customers used to call me all the time to find out the status of their cars, especially when they had their trailer hooked up and were waiting anxiously to come and pick them up
