69 CA license plates; can't do it.

Nope. At this point in time you cannot buy a set of 63-71 black & yellow plates and re-assign them to a newly registered car. These plates are still active in the sense that there are lots of car out there that were originally registered in the 60's still with those plates. Some of us are hoping that eventually it will be possible to register, say a '66, with vintage plates, but this system will likely cost the state some money to put into place and the state is broke, so don't count on it happening anytime soon. You might want to purchase a nice set of plates in the meantime, just in case it does eventually happen.

I would be disappointed if California allows people to bring in cars and register them with the black plates. The black plates are one of the only indicators left that show the car as an original California car. I think that there are very few cars with black plates left and they should be preserved. (this being said from someone with two black plate cars)

            Mike,

I hear what you're saying, but a number of states allow use of "year-of-manufacture" license plates, allowing, for example, someone with a 1960 Corvette to apply to use non-claimed 1960 license plates. Actually, in California, I think this can be done with the pre-63 yellow field/black lettered plates, but I'm not 100% certain of this.

More info on California YOM plates

For more info on year-on-manufacturer plates for Calif, go to: http://www.calpl8s.com/cpfaq.html
Part of what is posted there says:

                    California Year of Manufacture Registration

The Year of Manufacture law, frequently referred to as YOM, allows you to register an old California license plate which matches the year that your old vehicle was made in.

Currently, this type of registration is only available for vehicles that were made in 1962 or before. That means that only the 1956 black on yellow style plates, which were used through 1962, and older styles, are available for YOM. The 1963 yellow on black style plates, and all bases that came after them, are currently NOT available for YOM registration in California.

Confusion as to which bases are available for YOM registration stems from the fact that all the bases shown here can still be seen on the road. However, any old plate still on the road is only valid because it has been continuously registered to the same vehicle since it was originally issued. The CA legislature has attempted several times in recent years to extend the YOM law past 1962, but it has been vetoed by the Governor each time. There is currently no pending legislation to try again.

1956 style and older plates for YOM use can be purchased from plate collectors, at swap meets and garage sales, and on eBay. The old plate must have a number that is not currently in use on a California license plate. This is called being "clear".

To find out if a plate is clear, visit your local DMV office, or call the DMV Special Processing office in Sacramento, and ask if the plate number is clear for YOM. If they say there is no record, or the number is not in the computer, then it is clear. The phone number for the DMV Special Processing office in Sacramento is (916) 657-7606 or (916) 657-7654. There is no website access for this info.

                        Duane:

In regards to your license plates I registered 1960 plates recently ( 7 months ago) and didn't have a problem. I did have to make sure that the particular alpha and numerical sequence was NOT in use in California regardless of the plate color. I had a nice set of yellow with black numbers that were new that I attempted to register and was unable to because there was someone in California with a Volkswagon with the plate plate and yellow numbers that was still registered. I found another set that did not duplicate anything and it worked out fine. I even had to find an unused 1960 sticker to staisfy DMV.

Re: 69 CA license plates; DON'T do it.

                            Mike-----

You're not quite correct. Yellow letters on black background license plates DO NOT NECESSARILY indicate an original California car, at all. Any car originally registered in California between 1963 and September, 1969 would have been assigned these plates. So, if someone brought a car into California from another state prior to September, 1969 the car would have the black plates. However, it could have "lived a long time" in another state prior to that.

Also, since all cars under California registry were assigned the then-new yellow on black plates in 1963, any 1962 or older model car was assigned new plates at that time and, if still on the road in California, could still have those plates. Those cars could also have been previously registered in another state early in their lives.

The only cars with yellow on black plates which one can reasonably be assured lived their whole lives in California are 1969 models. As far as 1969 model cars go, virtually all originally registered in California were assigned yellow-on-black plates. However, Corvettes were an exception. Since the last yellow-on-black plates were issued in California about mid-September, 1969 and since 1969 Corvette production ran through the end of 1969, very late Corvettes originally registered in California were originally assigned yellow-on-blue plates. In fact, my car was one of them since I took delivery on September 30, 1969. When I was waiting for the plates to arrive I didn't know if I was going to get the black plates or the new blue ones. I was hoping for the blue, though, and that's exactly what I got.

By the way, with the yellow-on-black plates it is possible to "guesstimate" if the car was originally registered in California based upon the year model of the car and the first alpha character of the license plate series. It's not an "exact science", though. The same sort of "guesstimation" can be done with yellow-on-blue plates, too.
