    62 Water Pump Bolts

Do the 62 water pump bolts use lock washers ? I have been told both yes and no by 61-62 Mater Judges.

    Thanks for the help.

    John-----

I am not aware of any Chewvrolet small block that used lock washers on the water pump bolts THAT SEAT DIRECTLY ON THE WATERPUMP CASTING. Lock washers were used on bolts that may have seated on other things and also retained one of the waterpump legs (like, maybe, the ox-bow front motor mount on C1s). Also, where a stud was used on one of the waterpump leg bolt positions, lock washers were used on the OUTER portion of the stud which retained other peripheral components (but NOT under the stud hex where it seats on the waterpump casting).

            Joe,

Just out of curiousity: do you have any idea why GM decided not to use one here?

Does this has to do with additional chance on leaking?

            greetings,
            Rob.

I don't know for sure, but I expect that the engineering judgement was that these bolts were not susceptible to loosening as a result of vibration.

My guess was since sealer was used on these bolts, adding a lock washer wouldn't add much and adding a flat washer might even leave a small void and leak coolant.
But now I see so few 461X heads that aren't broken up around many of the head bolt holes that its hard not to add even a thin thrust washer under some bolts.
