    C1 Speedometer Installation

I just reinstalled my 1958 speedo and tach after rebuild by Corvette Specialties. I also put in a new speedo cable. Two questions:
    1. Does it matter which way (end-for-end) the core is routed in the sheath (crimped fitting on instrument or transmission end?).
    2. At the transmission, I can't seem to get the cable sheath knurled nut to screw down (and it's really hard to get a hand up there); it acts but doesn't look cross-threaded, in that it seems to stop on the threads after about one turn, while the cable and end cone flop about. What might I be missing - I had this in place before ...
Do I dare pull the "keeper bracket" (can't find the reference to the proper name) on the side of the tranny, risking dropping the gear into the abyss AGAIN, in order to sort out what's happening?

Al, I think one end of the cable will have a thrust washer so that the cable will only go in the housing one way. This end goes on the speedometer.

Those fittings have very shallow, fine threads, so cross threading is very easy.

Ed is correct about the cross threading...make sure you bring the nut & cable completely inline with the male port. A little effort of holding the cable inline should allow the nut to be hand threaded on...

Thanks guys, well I finally pulled the driven gear keeper off so I could see what's going on - the (new, repro) speedo cable's (knurled-ring) threads were apparently slightly mussed. I'm actually wondering if I ever had it screwed on the trans, as when I tried before the speedo wasn't working so I left things alone. But even out in the open, it wouldn't quite clamp the cone, and I didn't want to force it - used a thin rubber hose washer to make up the difference, it's firm now. ... Al '58 245hp
