    69 AC Evaporator question

The AC evaporator on my 69 does not have the black sealing material around the tube that connects to the suction throttling valve. At first I was going to use foam pipe insulation but I would like to know what material is this and where can I might be able to find it before I do that.

    Dick,

I think you are referring to the black moldable putty that the factory would use, also referred to as dum dum. If this is what you mean, 3M makes it and packages it in strips that you peel off. The strips are a foot long or so. Then you just mold it in your hands till it is pliable enough to mold into the area you need to fill. It is black by the way.Auto body supply should have it or probably even some NAPA stores will. If you need the 3M part number let me know, I have a package out in the garage. Craig

        Dick,
I can't tell you what it is made of, but any shop that does AC work should have it. It comes in a large roll -- larger than you will need in a lifetime. I think what we have at school came from NAPA, but since it is summer time it is difficult for me to check. Perhaps someone else will be able to give you a source for a reasonable quantity.

After reading Craig's post, it occurs to me that I may be thinking of the wrong material. Dick, are you asking about the black sticky material that holds the capillary tube to the aluminum tube? That is the material I was referring to.

The tube I'm referring to exits the evaporator on the top makes a U and then goes down and connects to the Suction Throttling valve. I would think the material is common at an AC shop. When I look at other units it looks like it is hand molded much like what Craig described. I'll check out a local NAPA store to see if they have it.

                    Thanks
When you get a chance I would appreciate it if you gave me the 3M part number.
