Have had problems with the shifter since the tear down in 01. After getting the tranny rebuilt and checked over, the shifter worked fine while it sat in the frame. I finally got things hooked up to go around the block, but the shifter jammed again!! Cannot get in reverse, and only 3rd gear. I think now it is about time I invest in a new one or does anyone have suggestions on a replacement. The tranny is a Muncie, 4-speed, #3837707, cast #3088336. I did replace the shifter gears? Managed to break the reverse lockout. Did not replace the linkages? Help! Thanks.

More likely it's worn linkage levers at the transmission.
The slots on these levers are supposed to fit tightly on the transmission side cover 1-2 and 3-4 studs. When the levers can wiggle around just a little bit, the shifter linkage gets out of adjustment every time you shift with any authority. Of course, if you shift like a girl...- Top

I'm talking about the two shifter linkage levers that are on the outside of the transmission side cover. They are attached to studs with nuts. They should fit so tightly over the rectangular shape of the stud base that you have to wiggle them off after removng the nut.
The '64-7 Muncie "nightstick" shifters will get sloppy with age. They usually begin to rattle or buzz, but they don't ever seem to stop working. I have always been able to bring them back to quiet, smooth operation using spacers. Also, I often have to weld the vertical mainshaft at the bottom where it enters its square base to remove the last rattle.- Top

Dont forget to check the weld that hyolds the outer housing of the shifter together. I have seen these break, allowing additional slop to enter the shifter mechanism.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but if you are saying the shifter worked fine until the transmission was rebuilt, I would first try to readjust the shifter because the problem that you describe sounds exactly like the gate is not indexed and adjusted properly. If that neutral slot isn't adjusted properly, it prevents the shifter from entering the reverse slot. The service manual should describe this adjustment procedure. If the shifter isn't pulling the transmission linkag completely out 1st or 2nd gear, it can become locked in the 3rd/4th slot.- Top
