    64 Rear End

My neighbor just blew up the rear diff of his 64 327/300 convertible. Can anyone recommend a good source for gears, shims, etc?

    Thanks.

    Chris-----

For parts I'd recommend Tom's Differential of Paramount, CA. They can supply any of the parts needed. They usually have several different brands of R&P gears available. As the best replacement for GM gears which are no longer available, I recommend gears manufactured by US Gear of Chicago, IL. If anyone has these, Tom should. US Gear does not sell direct.

For complete rebuilding service, I would recommend Charlie's Speed Shop of Champaign, IL or Carter's Corvette of Livermore, CA. Both have EXTENSIVE experience in rebuilding Corvette differential units.

Depending on whether the car is restored or not and how original the owner wants to keep it, you can find rear ends from 1963 to 1979 that fit and to 1977 that fit exactly. The '78 and '79 use a different sping bolt size. There is also the matter of the u-bolt or cap & bolt retainers on the inner u-joint, however, both work. Yours should be the u-bolt type, but the cap type will function perfectly.

The most obvious source is eBay. There have been some great deals of rear ends lately, because you have to pick them up. So if you watch, you might find one reasonably close.

You can pick up a used rear from $350 (not real common) to $500. Usually you can bolt it right in, however, it is always good to look inside.

Of course, going the way Joe suggests with the new gears will be a solid new item that you can trust completely. Still, most used rears are sound enough.

A lot also depends on the ratio you have and what you want to do.
