    '57 Wheel Cylinders-Brake Rebuild

A few questions on rebuilding and restoring the brake system on a 1957.

    1. Are the following cylinders correct? Two 1.0" dia. marked 5450 649, One 1.125" dia. marked 5453 821 and one 1.125" dia. marked 5453 822.

    2. Are the following bore diameters within tolerence. The 1.0" diameters check 1.005, the 1.125 diameters check 1.130. All cylinders have been honed and the bores cleaned up. Only .001 removed by honing process.

    3. If the components are glass beaded, should they be powder coated, painted or plated to protect against rust?

    4. Where can the best quality cylinder rebuild kit and other components be purchased? Are the aluminum pistons included in a kit or purchased separately? (only two needed) Will the quality be comparable with original equipment?

As always, thanks for the great information!

    Regards,

    Bob,
    1. Yes, all of them
    2. My guess. .001 over cylinders OK. Cylinders .005 over, I don't know. Think I'd try them.
    3. Originally natural cast iron finish. Cast Blast will be OK with Dot 5 fluid. Less than Dot 5 fluid is = to paint remover.
    4. NAPA us usually good enough for me. Regards,

Jim: Is the Cast Blast paint suitable to be used on components that are not Cast Iron? I'm not sure what you mean with the Dot5 fluid.

            Bob,
Don't see why Cast Blast paint couldn't be sprayed on anything. It's intent is to replicate the look/color (etc.) of cast iron (which brake cylinders are). Many paint venders have paint intended to do the same thing. Dot 5 brake fluid is another name for silicon brake fluid. Silicon doesn't attack paint. All other brake fluids do. Regards,
