Need the Joe Lucia touch- C1 part #

    Joe (or anyone),

I need your expert help. I have a pair of "NOS something" chrome headlight rings. They have been represented as NOS Delco '56 and '57 chrome headlight rings. The outside original Delco box has #5947244 which is correct for '56 and '57 corvette. But, on the parts themeselves the part number is #5947245. The last number being the only difference.

They look correct except for two addtional holes that are factory placed in the center/outer of the ring directly across from each other. I have not checked the fit, size or configuration against my car, but they look correct in every other respect. Can you tell me what the application for these are please? Thanks.

As you are aware, GM #5947244 is the correct part number for the 56-57 headlight ring moldings. There never was a finished part of GM #5947245. So, I strongly suspect that this was the casting number used for the 5947244 molding. Very often casting numbers will vary from the part number by 1 or 2 digits and, usually, they are 1 digit higher than the part number. I think that you will find the 5947245 on the original rings, too.

I don't know why the configuration of the rings with respect to holes is different. It's possible that the part was revised over the years. Originally available in the fall of 1955, it wasn't discontinued until July, 1974. So, that's a long time and who knows what could have happened "along the way".

        Joe,
As always thanks. It is too bad that these have the holes in them because they are in great shape and still have the rubber gasket with stapled end. The clearly don't look right with the holes and therefore are not going on my car. Thanks again.

I can't imagine why they would have made a change involving the addition of holes to the part. This part was a 1956-57-Corvette-only item. It was not used for any other application and, considering its configuration, I can't imagine that it would have been used for any other application. All I can figure is that the part changed for the 1957 model year and the specs were revised while the part number remained the same. When this occurs, SERVICE parts produced after the last revision will incorporate the revision. I'm not that familiar with the 56-57 headlight rings, though.
