    C2 Correct Oil Pan

Hi guys. I started a string a few days ago on obtaining a correct oil pan for a 65 L79. Low and behold look what showed up on ebay today! Can the parts gurus confirm that this is a correct pan for my application? Looks like the right pan to me but want to be sure before bidding.

    Thanks!

    Don,

Send the seller an email and ask if he'd be willing to give up the part number that would be on the box. Not sure why he wouldn't have listed that in the ad. Hope it's not a secret.

Yes - this looks correct. It probably is the newer pan with the changed front seal Joe mentioned, but will work just fine....Craig

Also ask him to measure from the flat

to the arch on the front seal - if it's o/a 2 1/2", it's a service replacement - if it's 2 1/4", you've got a chance. I personally think that the indentations on the first level (on each side) are too deep.

                Don-----

The pan is either a GM #3820000 or a GM #360866. That's for absolute positive. The 3820000 was the pan originally used in PRODUCTION for most 63-74 Corvette small blocks. The 360866 is the 1976 SERVICE replacement for the 3820000. It differs only with respect to the radius of the front seal. For all practical purposes, this difference cannot be discerned with the pan mounted on the engine.

Unfortunately, the seller didn't provide the part number and the photo of the GMSPO label provided does not include the part number. However, it does include a date---that being what appears to be 8-1-63. If that's really the date, then this pan has to be a 3820000; the 360866 didn't exist yet on 8-1-63. On the other side of the coin, I don't recall GMSPO using this sort of label as far back as 1963, so, perhaps, my interpretation of the date is incorrect.

The above is really academic, though. Like I say, the pan IS DEFINITELY either a 3820000 or a 360866 and either of those are what you need. As far as originality goes, the distinction between them is, for all practical purposes, rather "moot".

Thanks Joe and everyone! I asked the bidder to provide the part number. Regardless of which it is, I will bid on it. We'll see what happens!

Joe, like you say, not that it matters, but I think this label which I have seen frequently on some of my special parts orders indicates a date of 08/16/3 where the last means either 63,73,83,93, or 03. I may have an item laying around.....I could check, but for all practical purposes other than understaning the label date breakdown as you say it is moot.....Craig
