C3 - Repair Pot Metal Grille

Is there a way to repair a broken grille?
I have a 73 center grille with a broken fin...still loosely attached and need to get it repaired before having it re-chromed.

Is there any way to salvage this part?

Yes, there is. Zinc diecast ("pot metal") can be repaired using the low temperature, alloy welding rod available from the Cecil Muggy Company of Torrance, CA. Originally, this welding rod was developed for use in the refrigeration industry. However, many different substrate materials can be effectively welded using it, including zinc diecast.

You can purchase the rod directly from the Cecil Muggy Co (www.cecilmuggy.com) and use it with a propane torch. The problem is that you really need to develop some skill with this before attempting to repair something like this grille. Many radiator repair shops have developed skill with this rod. I'd suggest calling Cecli Muggy and asking him for a recommendation for a shop in your area that he considers especially good.

I will definitely look towards a radiator shop because I have no skills in this arena.

Ron, for the broken piece, it will probably be much better for you to send the grille to a chrome-plater that specializes in die-cast repair before plating.

I used a reputable plater for diecast repair and plating in PA (Mars, PA? Fred Heispenheide?), but the company name escapes me. Others here are familiar with this well-known company, and may be able to supply the name and phone number. If not, buy a Hemmings Motor News...for years, they have had a large picture ad showing before and after pictures of a 34 Ford grille.
