    C2 Leaf Spring

The leaf spring on my 67 Coupe needs replacement. The car is a small block with base suspension. I was considering the idea of installing a 7 leaf instead of a 9 leaf spring. Can anyone tell me if this is a good or bad idea. I am not concerned with correctness, but was wondering if the 7 leaf will work with the stock front coil springs. Thanks

    Joseph,

Before replacing your spring you should take a good look at restoring your original and install new liners and new rubber cushions on the ends as they can be some of your ride height problem. When I restored my 63 spring, I substituted the main leaf with a new main leaf and restored the other original parts. There are articles about this in the restorer magazine. If you feel that the spring is wore out I would replace with a standard nine leaf but be careful as many members have complained about high ride height on repro. springs so go with a known supplier. Nothing looks worse than a car that sits to high or low. Good luck, Timothy Barbieri

-------Any competent spring shop can re-arch your original spring in 95 out of 100 cases. You can buy the spring liners at all the major Vette vendors as was stated..........Bill S

Joe - I agree with Timothy and Bill - keep the original. Gary Beaupre's restorer articles are great, and you can install a repro main leaf and save the original upper leaves and still have a very sturdy spring for driving. If you consider re-arching, make sure they re-anneal the spring, cold arching may result in a weak spring that is suitable only for judging. As I recall, John Hinkley may have suggested a spring shop in MI somewhere that does this correctly. Personally, I think I would go for the repro lower spring leaf, and the original upper leaves.....you will probably need to buy the complete repro spring. Eaton Spring I believe has the best aftermarket repro spring....Craig
