    Bill - if you use the non external bypass pump you mention, it is fine, AS LONG as you insure the internal bypass from the passenger side leg to the block is open and not blocked off by a plug or gasket. The engine DOES need a bypass, the external bypass is a larger path than the internal bypass. No bypass at all is not a good thing......Craig

        Re: 1965 Water Pump

        Craig;

        What happens if the internal bypass is blocked? I thought that the pin that came with the water pump was a dowel locating pin and installed it as well as plugging the external bypass port. I now have two options: pull the pump and remove the pin from the internal bypass port, or; install the external bypass hardware. I've just placed an order for the external bypass hardware but it will likely be a week or two before it gets here. Can I drive the car without a bypass? What is the purpose of the bypass and what happens if both are blocked?

        Thanks for the heads-up!

            Bill - All I can say is, I am willing to bet you will have a time of it removing that pipe plug in the water pump by-pass inlet on your 3844461 manifold - I picked up a spare 3844461 manifold last year for a good price, with the by-pass hole plugged, thought I'd just take that little plug right out and be all set - ummm, wrong! Point is that should you decide to put the correctly-configured pump on you L79 (requiring the attempted removal of the pipe plug from the manifold) I would save it for a winter project, lest you find yourself out of commission for an extended period, which isn't nearly as painful when warm sunny summer days are not passing you by . .

            as for getting all the parts (by-pass hose, 90 deg. fittings, etc.) needed for the switch to the pump with the by-pass, all are readily available from the various sources and can be at your door within a few days.

                Jack;

                Do you have any suggestions for how to remove the pipe plug from the aluminum intake? I assume that the threads are likely seized. Is there any risk of cracking the manifold or stripping the threads out of the aluminum if I try like hell to twist that plug out? I would prefer to install the external bypass hardware if possible to make the car more correct.

                Thanks,

                    Bill - much wiser men than I are on this board, and they will weigh in with the time-honored methods for removing seized bolts (liquid solvents and heat being the two categories that will be mentioned). As for my experience, I had the manifold on a bench and let all manner of penetrating liquids soak in from in front and behind the plug, and weeks later (after diligent re-application of penetrants) tried to remove it - no glory there so tried heating the area of the manifold (plumber's torch) - - put my biggest pursuader (breaker bar) on it, then put a pipe over that for more leverage, eventually succeeded in twisting off the face of the plug (although such did put up a valiant fight), unit now needs to be drilled out and re-threaded. Or I could sell it on ebay as a 64-65 Corvette SHP aluminum manifold in great shape and get big bux for it

                    But you are not there yet, and for all you know, that little plug will come right out, all I was sayin' is that you might want to leave that job for the winter season lest it go south on you, because it will, in that case, interrupt driveability.
