I went through the archives and the manuals I have but didn't find anything that answered my question. Should you grease your U Joints? If yes, with what? I know very little about U Joints. I am a little concerned about them because one of the caps fell off when I was putting my clutch in last year. Being the rocket scientist that I am, I just picked the cap up, made sure none of the needle bearings had fallen out, and put the cap back on.

Re: How do you tell if their bad?
Bob-----
The best an easist way to tell if a u-joint is "bad" is to examine the u-joint trunnions. This is the machined bearing surface upon which the roller bearings ride. Look for brinneling, pitting, or other damage. If ANY is present, and I mean ANY, then the u-joint is scrap. All it takes is for ONE of the four trunnions on a u-joint to be so-damaged to render the u-joint unserviceable and unfit for re-use. If your u-joints have 10-15 thousand miles on them, what are the chances that at all four of the trunnions on each u-joint are NOT so-damaged? The answer is slim to none. This problem is especially prevalent with half-shaft u-joints which are more heavily loaded and worked than drive shaft u-joints. That's why I only recommend the use of the VERY HIGHEST quality u-joints on Corvettes. For me, that means Spicer ONLY.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
