    56 rear axle bearing

Can someone tell me what the inside diameter of the axle housing where the axle bearing rides in is. Or how much clearance there should be between diameter of axle bearing and housing?

    Terry,
If I understand your question, the '56 bearing and retainer ring is a REAL tight fit to the axle shaft. Tight, like both bearing and ring will have to be pressed off and new back on. Best done by a machine shop with a hydraulic press. The bearing and ring is pressed on up to the machined stop on the axle. The '56 axle bearing is sealed facing the pumpkin, says so in the '56 Chevrolet service manual. Regards,

No I'm talking about the outer edge of bearing and the inside of axle HOUSING. I know the bearing is pressed on the axle, but once you slide the axle in the housing there has to be enough of a space bearing to fit in the housing, if was a real tight fit the rubber o-ring would come off.

            Terry,
I just did both axles on mine. One new bearing, other old. I scraped/cleaned out the axle housing where the bearing fit where the bearing fit. I used a little grease on the "O" rings and both sides fit together OK. The axle groove is deep enough that I thought the ring must squish down into it somewhat. Regards,
