    Re: 1972 Tuning Question

OK, but I'm not sure I'll physically be able to get the carb to close enough to allow for an idle that low. I may end up removing the base plate and reinspecting it. Life could be worse than rehabbing that so that I can get the throttles to close all the way and do so easily.

Given that it's an old Corvette, the ability of the emergency brake to work is quite questionable. I may have to chock the wheels and find some heavy blocks to keep it from moving while in drive.

BTW, dwell and timing are right on.

Get someone to sit and hold the brake. You begin revving that engine, the emergency brake will never hold it.

Wheel chocks that are usually found in places are often too small unless you have some airplane chocks. A friend (?) had his race car chocked with the typical little ones and when he fired it up in gear (by mistake), It jumped those chocks and smashed right into the car in front.

Wrap a rag around the coil wire and in case things start to go wrong, you can pull that wire faster than getting around to the key or brake.

I thought it would be obvious, but you DON'T REV THE ENGINE when adjusting the idle speed and mixture in Drive with an auto trans.

On an older carb with throttle shaft wear will often have have inconsistent idle speed due to shifting of the shaft as the throttle is backed off to the stop - depending on how fast the throttle is dropped.
