        Re: My '66 were revited.

None of the T nuts on my 67 are attatched. The access door does have holes where the rivits would have been. If the T nuts were held in by rivits I don't think my access door would line up properly. I have the T nut install kit from Dr. Rebuild that includes rivits for the T nuts (2 rivits per T nut).

I've restored three '63's with air and all were riveted.

JR - my 67 AC coupe has the T-nuts riveted, but several are missing (the rivets, not the T-nuts) but I can see they were there. I have a kit from Dr Rebuild but haven't got around to installation yet....Craig

I have what I think is a '66 fender and access panel. There are holes for the rivets, but the rivets are gone, except possibly one.

Loren - Interesting information. My experience with the battery access panels on 63-76 C60 Corvettes which should be identical to the '65 396 application has been to find at least some remnants of holes for the rivets or rivets attaching the Tee nuts. Tough location for keeping clean and/or operational, because the end (cone end) of the bolt ended up becoming corroded and then when you went to remove them the Tee nut spun and ripped out the rivets and so the story goes. It was not a pretty sight.

Now, I have to ask the question based on your response, if the Tee nuts were not attached with the world's smallest rivets, what in the world did they use? Pete

OK, I think there is some good information coming out of this thread about the access doors. Interviewing the guy or guys that attached these doors would clear up this but since that would be impossible, let us assume the following happened.

                            1. GM intended the doors to have the nut plates riveted on.

                            2. Some doors would not fit the drilled holes.

                            3. Some nut plates popped off upon trying to install them.

                            4. Some nut plates were re-attached to the panel with body seam adhesives.

I think this would explain why the majority of the nut plates were attached with rivets as GM intended yet some were clearly attached with bonding adhesives.

Critique this chain of events and see if it makes sense to you. Certainly this will cause a problem in judging but a seasoned judge will understand that GM didn't stop the line for a few nut plates with microscopic rivets lying on the floor.

                            Regards,

                            JR

As usual you make a lot of sense with your replys. Rivets would be "typical factory production" but the logic for the adhesive makes a lot of sense.
