    67' instrument cluster re-install

Had the innstrument cluster rebuilt and its ready to go back in. I thought I should replace the instrument lights while I had it out so I ordered a bulb kit from Ecklers. As I begun to replace them I noticed the bulbs were "made in China" and the ones I was taking out had the GE stamp on them. Anyone have any experience with these chinese bulbs? Am I better off leaving the old ones in???

There is also a grey wire (Same color and gage wire as the wires leading to the clock lights) near the clock with a strange looking condensor(?) on the end. It looks just like, and is about the size and Shape as a 45 calber bullet with a green tip on it. Excuse my ignorance but I can't find it in any of my manuals and I'm curious hell as to what this is!! Thanks !!! Mike Arteaga

Mike - personally, I would go with the GE bulbs vs China. The other item is indeed a capacitor, for radio noise supression. See a thread below with lots of detail....Craig

I wouldn't use the off shore "Lamps" get some GE or Sylvania. While your at it ditch the Ecklers catalog. JMHO

Instrument lamps have a great service life. My original owner 68 has all original dash lamps and my original owner 70 has had only one replacement. No way to predict how long the GE bulbs you removed will function.

                Mike:

The "bullet" with the green tip, is actually a bulb, clip, and green tinted shade. It attaches to the radio case.

                    Mike:

One of my other hobbies is pinball machine restoration. There are a lot of small lamps in difficult to reach locations on these machines. So, I like to use lamps with a low failure rate. It has been my experience that the imported bulbs fail at a higher rate than the old U.S. produced bulbs. Keep the G.E. lamps.

The "other item" that looks like a bullet is the illumination lamp assembly for the heater control bezels; it clips into a slot at the bottom center of the clock mounting housing, and gets its ground from contact between the upturned end of its clip and the outside of the metal clock case; A/C cars have two more that clip into the slots at 4 and 8 o'clock. It's shown in the '67 A.I.M in UPC 1 Asm, Sheet E7.
