    Lost speedo gear 67 PG

While trying to remove my speedo gear it slipped back into the tail housing. Any tips on getting it out without having to remove the transmission? I've tried fishing it out but with very little cleareance I've had no luck.

    Kevin:

I think you'd be better off to go get another gear and leave that one lay. I don't think it will hurt anything laying there. The only way I know you could get it out is with mechanical fingers and it would be a stretch to believe you get hold of the stem of the gear and pull it out. As you probably know, that is the only way it will come through the hole.

Best I remember, the PG has an extension housing bolted on the main case. If it does, you could pull that off and get your gear.

Leave it there , it wont hurt any thing "plastic" be sure to install the same COLOR gear.( color determines the number of teeth it has ),

I'm leaning toward leaving it in there, speedo shop said the same thing. Just want to be sure this a safe thing to do? Trans shop will get it out for $75 for piece of mind would this be a better route?

I should have stated from the begining that the reason for removal was the fact it was reading fast. and I wanted to put another gear in to correct this.

So I just got off the phone with my local Chevy parts dept. and they told me my speedo gears have been discontinued.

Looking in the Dr. Rebuilt cat pg102 I see 22 gears listed. If I had to guess of the colors listed I think my original was either natural or silver. I'm going with silver because in the catalog it says to use a silver 22 tooth with 3:08 to 3:55 my rear is a 3:36. Now my speedo is reading fast and using the method of counting teeth and multiplying by 1.125 I come up with 24.75. I think a black 25 tooth is going to be to slow so I'm going with the yellow 24 tooth.

Any feed back would be appericated.

If it will make you feel better and you don't need $75.00 go for it.
But I would keep my $75.

A word of encouragement for the possiblity of fishing it out:
I don't know if the PG housing is maybe simply too cavernous compared to the T-10, but some months back when I dropped the speedo gear into my T-10, I WAS able to fish it out using a foot-long piece of #14 Cu insulated house wire, bent into various shapes - when I managed to move the thing toward the opening and glimpse part of it, I used forceps to grab it. It was traumatic and tiring (on my back with car on jackstands), but I got it. I don't think I would have persevered without hearing from others that they had been successful.
Good luck whichever way you go. ... Al '58 245hp
