I know most folks talk about and discuss the condition where their temp gauge indicates a HOTTER condition than an IR scan reveals. That is NOT my condition. I just replaced the temp sender with the Autozone part that folks in this forum recommend as being calibrated properly. The old one quit completely, but it wasn't original either. My 67 327/300 car now runs around the first tick mark or slightly above, which I think is supposed to be the 180 point. Sounds great right? Well, when I scan the thermo housing with my IR gun, I typically get about 200-205 deg. F. I have a 16 lb cap and no rad fluid ever spurts out of the overflow. My IR scanner is an inexpensive Lacrosse unit, so maybe it is off? I haven't heard anyone talking about how their temp gauge was reading LOWER than actual - only the opposite!! Comments?

Re: Opposite temp gauge problem?
Tim
I replaced the old rad in my 64 with the Dewitt unit and installed the Letric Limited temp sending unit. The car runs between 180-185. I does heat soak to 210 after hot engine shut down but quickly returns to normal temp when restarted. Something is not correct with your configuration. Either the temperature scanner is reading too hot or you have some other cooling problem.
I suggest trying a diffrent unit to check to the temperature. Wait tell the wife is out and tape a meat thermometer to the thermostat housing. The reading should be +/- 5 deg of actual temperature. If the second reading is close to the scanner's reading something else is causing your engine to run hot.
good luck.- Top

Re: I.R. test
Get a pot of water boiling and place a cooking thermometer in and wait for it to stabalze.
Remove the pot to a safe location away from the stove and shoot it with your I.R. gun and see what the differences are.
That way the wife won't complain about her temperature probe having greasey finger smudges on it

Re: Opposite temp gauge problem?
Tim,
You do have a cooling problem and it's not the Dewitts radiator. With no disrespect for the advise you received on the board, but there is no replacement sending unit from Autozone, Pep Boys, NAPA etc. that is calibrated properly for the Corvette.
There are apparently two companies that claim their sending units are calibrated properly. One is Lectric Limited and the other is K & B Special Products. I have used and sold the ones from K & B Special Products with no complaints. On my personal 66 they work perfectly and have the original marking as they are an authorized GM replacement part. At least they have the AC delco markings on them. Have not compared them to originals so not 100% sure on the markings.
Good luck with your cooling problem,

Re: Opposite temp gauge problem?
OK, I will perform some more troubleshooting. I drive in a parade tomorrow in what is probably 90 deg. weather, so if I make it though without popping the cap I will be lucky!! Thanks for the replies!
Regarding the temp sensors, where can I buy the K & B Special Products part at a reasonable price? I know where to get the Lectric Limited part.- Top
