Paint and inspection marks

The only part of your question I think I can answer is that if the steering box is painted black, I've been told that the inspection marks would have been covered up by the paint. Implying only natural boxes should have any visible inspection marks. I might have been told this by Corvette Steering Service, Inc., who restored my steering box, but I can't remember for certain.
