1972 Accelerator Cable - too short?

    Hello All,

Well, I went back to check out Dad's 72 today. If you recall, I got some tuning tips here last week.

The first thing I wanted to check out was the accelerator cable vs. the throttle arm relationship. So, I disconnected the two. It turns out the throttle arm turns easily and does not bind. In addition, it will now fully close rather than stop about 1/16" short of the idle speed screw.

So I inspected the accelerator cable. I can find no adjustment for length, and the AIM does not show different ones for manual vs. auto trans (this car is auto). No matter how hard I pull on the cable, it will not extend out as far as it should. I later compared it to my own 71 and 72 cars, and when disconnected from the carb they extend out 1 inch and 3/4 inch respectively PAST the point at which they would attach to the throttle arm on the carb. The too-short cable on Dad's car does not "seem" to have any major kinks that would shorten it, either. Somehow it needs to be able to extend out 3/8" farther at a minimum. When I do pull it, the cable extends far enough that the lever under the dash goes all the way to the firewall (I can hear it hit, and I went under the dash to check, too.) and it does not seem to interfere with anything under the dash. The cable appears to be the original to the car.

Assuming I'm not missing some point of accelerator cable length adjustment (and I don't guarantee I'm not), has anyone ever seen this before? Can I just purchase a new accelerator cable and be home free? Do I take the chance that it will be long enough? I'm sure it will help my tuning if I could then get the throttle to close at idle.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I don't understand it, at all. All 1969-72 Corvettes, except 1969 3X2, used the same accelerator cable. In 1973, the part changed to GM #336977 and that part thereafter became the SERVICE replacement cable for 1968-72. It's possible that was because of some "problem" with the original 68-72 cable. Anyway, the 336977 cable is still available for about 25 bucks GM list. Maybe it's worth a try.

Patrick Did you check to see if the cable is seated right where it connects at the pedal arm and the cable is in the center. I think it snaps in. Lyle

No, that's probably the only thing I didn't check. I only had a huge flashlight, and couldn't maneuver well. I need to go back with a small light.

Did you loosen the cable hold down clamp at the carb? The outer shield of the cable is held to the carb via a steel bracket, and there is room for adjustment here.
                Just a thought.

                    George,

The nice little flange on the cable sheath pretty much tells you where the cable has to mount. Sure, I could cheat here, but I'm not sure it would help much.

I'll be at Dad's for supper tomorrow evening. I'll check the attachment under the dash as Lyle mentions. If nothing obvious, I'll order a new one so I have it on hand when I return from Windsor.

                        Hi,

I went under the dash, and also inspected the accelerator cable very closely. I then compared it to my other two cars as well as a very low mile original car (thanks, Charlie).

I'm 98% certain that someone "repaired" the carb end of the accel cable, and as a result shortened it just enough to cause a LOT of problems for me. The end connector is VERY close to an original in configuration, just slightly longer. It only took me several years to notice this...

Needless to say, I'm calling to order a new one in the AM.
