    C3 HEI Distributor upgrade

In addition to my basketcase carb (discussed in earlier posts), my distributor is also in need of replacement. A mechanic friend of mine suggested I consider upgrading to a Performance Distributors' DUI HEI system. Does anyone out there have any experience with these?

Will it fit inside my 1968 327's ignition shielding?

Thanks in advance for any input.

What is wrong with your 68's distributor? The original distributor is most reliable and can be rebuilt/refurbished to give many miles of service life.

Agree with Jim. Time to rebuild the original distributor. Don't you think it could use a little TLC after 38 years of service?

An HEI will not fit under the shielding.

For stock HEI distributors, you are right. But in the bigger scheme of things, I beg to differ. High Tech Innovations, the Florida based distributor builder/re-builder, markets an HEI with a tach drive. I can't find a current phone number for them, or a web presence, but I am sure others here have dealt with them.

And it used to be cheaper

to drop a regular HEI in and buy a '75 electronic tach for any C3. But with the increase in parts prices today, you are probably just as well off to buy the tach drive HEI.

Just look in most Corvette magainzes, you'll find an ad.

So the only issue is do you want to stay stock or original, or do you want to get the low maintenance of the HEI?

The other issue in favor of the points is a non-issue today with the way people drive these cars.

The phone number for High Tech Innovations is 727-942-4003. They manufacture their HEI distributors from new GM distributors which they modify with the addition of a mechanical tach drive. These aren't inexpensive, though----they cost about $600/each.
