    C1 exhaust system removal

I am looking at the exhaust pipes from the mufflers forward. My engine is out now.

How is this pipe replaced once the engine is in? I assume it can be but since it goes thru the frame twice I wonder?

    Thanks, Chris

The pipes are usually in sections. The header pipe will come through the first part of the frame; and then there will be another section and connection for the mufflers coming from the second cutout in the frame.

Are you sure you are talking C1's? Mine is one piece and it looks like the ones available are one piece from the manifolds to the mufflers.

            Chris:

You may want to identify the year; however, I believe the C1's are similar. I have a 56; and I was just working on it last evening. I also have a 65 (C2) fuel car with an off-road one piece system.

Postscript: The one piece system that I have for my 65 also has a header pipe connection in the front.

The main run of the original '62 exhaust system was two pieces per side; one from the manifold back through the first "X" member hole, and the muffler assembly included a long inlet pipe that passed through the rear "X" member hole and joined with the front pipe at the hanger between the "X" members with a U-bolt.

Thanks everyone. Once I knew what to look for I see the LARGE arrow pointing at the pipe where in the blowup view you can see the eged of the pipe.

Since I am only doing forward of the dash this year I hope to get the front pipes off and replace them.

An excellent photo in Adams' book...

...in the 56 section, shows a fully installed exhaust system in a chassis with an engine/trans assembly held above. I suggest you do it GM's way, since the engine is out now.
