    65 AXLE CODE/PROTECTO-PLATE

I'M RESTORING A 65 BB COUPE, I HAVE THE PROTECTO-PLATE AND WOULD APPRECIATE SOME INFO DECIPHERING THE CODES AND SOME ADVICE. THE ENGINE CODE IS TO712IF H I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE "H"REPRESENTS. THE TRANSMISSION CODE IS P0622, ASSUMING 0622 IS DATE WHAT DOES THE "P" REPRESENT? AND THE AXLE CODE IS FC0611W S. I BELIEVE FC IS 4.56 POSI, THE 06/11 IS DATE, BUT WHAT ARE THE "W" AND "S"? WHICH LEADS TO MY DILEMMA THE REAR END HAS BEEN CHANGED IN THE CAR. IT IS NOW A "AS" CODE WITH A DATE OF NOV 64 AND A CASTING DATE OF 2/64 WHICH IS CONFUSING TO ME. INSIDE ARE 3.23 WITH POSI, SO OBVIOUSILY SOME ONE HAS TINKERED WITH IT. IF THE "FC" ON THE PROTECTO-PLATE IS 4.56 POSI, THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO GO BACK WITH. IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE CASE THAT I HAVE AND THE CASE THAT I SHOULD HAVE? ARE THERE BLANK CASES AVAILABLE THAT COULD BE STAMPED WITH THE CORRECT CODES? OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP.

    Ed:

First, TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK. Okay, I think the 4.56 and 4.11 housings were different because of the larger ring gears. The W stands for Warren MI. There are cases available with no codes, or wiped pads for restamping. As you know, they are not judged anyway (in Flight Judging), but I would also want to have it "right". The P on the trans stands for Muncie 4 speed.

You'll find a page in your copy of the '65 Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) that documents the Protect-O-Plate showing you what the codes mean and where on the plate these codes were punched.

Housings were the same for all factory-available ratios.

Ed -- Let's use GM terminology to avoid confusion. The "carrier" contains the differential "case" (to which the ring gear bolts). Your late '65 should have carrier cast #3876476-N on the passenger side near the front. Colvin says this carrier was changed from #3818753-N in Feb '65, and my September assy 4.11 has the early number. Maybe your '64 also has this #. One "early" identifier is the foremost bolt holes on the carrier front support (to frame) are threaded, and not straight through clean bore, as are the rears.

Your "AS" code shows as a rare 3.70 NON-posi w/327 1965 model-year differential. The 8 month spread between cast and diff assembly is not surprising, due to the low demand.

The Eaton posi "case" 3-series (for 3.08 thru 3.70 ratios) will have casting # EDB 30117, and the 4-series (4.11 and 4.56) requires # EDB 30175 casting. Your present unit, if non-posi, will be some other cast; maybe others would know.

Your rear cover should be cast # 3871375 (upside down where it bolts to the diff mount X-member) Your '64 or early '65 unit MAY be cast 3830303.

PS: The "S" on your data plate represents the month of vehicle production; July, in this case
