    R-89S Battery

I am contemplating the purchase of a R-89S battery from Corvette Central for my '71, and was wondering since it is shipped dry, what do I need to fill it with? Is distilled water sufficient? If battery acid is necessary, where would I obtain it? After it's filled, will a normal battery charger be able to charge it, or will it need to be brought somewhere for charging?

    Thanks in advance

    Robert:

You will need to buy a box of battery acid. Fill using acid only. CC will probably not ship haz-mat, so you'll have to buy it yourself. Any good auto parts store can order it for you. Charge on trickle charge with a standard charger.

I purchased battery acid off the shelf at a local farm and fleet store. Might want to check if there is one in your area. BTW, I wouldn't put one on a car unless you are getting it judged. There is a reason these batteries went the way of bias ply tires. Might want to check into the repro sealed batteries. It will look good under the hood without all the mess! I intend to get one as soon as the earlier style is available in the sealed design. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Don. I appreciate your advice. My intention is to have the car looking as original as possible with the hope to have it Flighted in the near future. I realize that the sealed battery is probably the better choice but I really like the look of the original R-89S battery. I'll have to call around and see where I can buy battery acid.

I bought my repro battery from Restoration Battery Co. (where CC gets them) I was very satisfied(no deducts)Got the acid from local NAPA store. The battery lasted only one year. It did look good, though!

Bob, so what your telling me is not to waste my money. What kind of warranty did they give you (if any)?

Robert, They will give you a warrenty, but because I used a constant trickle- charger on it , they said that's what did it in! Just ask Restoration about what they do now for a warrenty.I bought one of their very first R-89's.They should have the kink's out by now. Don't get me wrong, the product is beautiful!

Ditto, mine lasted a little over year, and made a real mess in my freshly detailed engine compartment. I just recycled it at pep boys and got a modern battery. I would be interested if anyone has tried the sealed repros from New Castle. Seems to me you could get the best of both worlds with vintage appearance and modern design. Not sure how they would do in flight judging though.
