    1971 454 block casting #

Was the 72 big block casting # 3999289 used in late( serial number above 21000- late June July production) 1971 LS5 & LS6. I seen a 3999289 block with E1871 casting date.

    Thanks

I can't find anything that would indicate that the 3999289 block was ever used for the 1971 model year for Corvettes or otherwise. It's not impossible, though. The 3999289 was manufactured in only 2 bolt main configuration, so it certainly would not have been used for any 1971 LS-6 engines.

According to the 1968-1982 Corvette Specifications Guide, this casting number was used in 1972, 1973, and 1974 Corvettes. It was also used in 72-75 Chevelles, 72-76 passenger cars, adn 73 to 79 trucks.

It could be an early start on start on '72 production.

If the assembly date is all stamped for a late '71, then it is possible, I would guess. Jsut check everything else to see if it all jives. Car look origina? Owner seem legit? etc. etc.

            Joe:
The big block casting for 71 is 3963512 and is used for both the LS5 & LS6. Was this configured for both 4-bolt and 2-bolt mains? If so, what is it different and how was it identified for the respective applications?

            Thanks

The 3963512 casting was used for both 2 and 4 bolt main blocks. There are really only minor differences between this block and the 1972 block.

As far as identifying a 2 bolt from a 4 bolt 3963512 casting, usually the 4 bolt castings will be drilled and tapped for oil cooler provisions in the oil filter boss area. This is not a 100% accurate means to identify, though, since some 2 bolt blocks may be drilled and tapped, too.

                    Bernie,
I have a 3999289 with an E2171 cast date in 1972 #3613. Bear in mind that distinguishing an E and F can sometimes be tricky, so I offer no certainties. Just FWIW
