first of all, members traveling to Canada----take it easy and arrive uneventfully. Second, is a COPY of passport sufficient? thanks. mike

Not according to US Customs, but a birth certificate is OK instead.

I think Mike was asking what was

required to get into Canada, not to re-enter the US. I know that good photocopies of passports have traditionally been accepted by Canada Customs to permit entry of US citizens into Canada, as have US Customs accepted similar paperwork from Canadians entering the US.

Having said that,it's a long way to drive just to get turned back. Best play by the rules.

I was stating what I was told by a US Custums agent a couple of weeks ago. A passport is also acceptable.

I was hoping you'd realize that I was subtly hinting that US Customs doesn't dictate what Canada Customs does or does not accept. (Or vice versa.)

Canadian Customs are use to dealing with US citizens, many of which don't own passports. A drivers license and birth certificate will normally suffice, and many times a drivers license alone will work. I will say they do get a little more intense when one parent is traveling with a child as the first thing they think about is a divorced parent kidnapping their own child. Bring birth certificates for kids. They will usually ask the kids a question or two, like is this your father, etc. so give them a heads-up beforehand. A dear friend of mine went over with his 8 year old son last year and for reasons that still escape hime the boy answered no when asked if that was his dad. That led to an hour delay and one unhappy daddy.

                        When did this start?

I drove from Illinois to Toronto about twice a year to go to hockey memorabilia shows for about 5 years starting in 1997, and I was never once asked for a birth certificate or passport. Actually, they didn't even ask for my license half the time. They ran my plates and asked the usual questions.
However, keep in mind they have no sense of humor regarding firearms.

This whole subject is similar to

speculating whether a cop is going to give you a speeding ticket for doing 70 in a 55 zone, and how much it's going to cost. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Won't know for sure till it's too late.

For those that are getting the weak kneed jitters, why not just read up on the rules and be prepared. Don't tell me you weren't in the Boy Scouts!
