    66 console restoration

I have scoured the archives but can only find one reference to repainting the chromed center console. What type of primer should I use over the chrome before painting. Also can I use the same interior dye that I got from zip for my radio side panels and the like. They came out perfect.

    Thanks,

    I know A Guy Named

Dick Little, (really) but because he is about 6"5" and 250 I call him Richard.

There is a product I am fond of for this purpose, Black Satin. Specifically formulated to be painted directly over Chrome without primer and It is a very good color match in this area. Many of the Corvette Shops and Hot Rod shops carry it.

The spray die should work in the application you mentioned.

      Bruce -

I used the regular interior dye without a primer because I was afraid of filling the texture lines. No problems, and the console came out great. That was a year ago, and it still looks great. I did make certain it was absolutely clean before spraying.

Did you tape off those areas which were not to be painted and with what specific tape? I have the bright blue interior in a 1965. From which company should I order the blue vinyl spray paint?

            Jack -

Yes, I did tape the chrome trim, but not too neatly. In taping, I made sure that every area requiring paint was completely clear and open, knowing that in doing so some of the chrome trim would end up with paint. It is very easy to use toothpicks and rags moistened with paint thinner to remove paint from areas where it shouldn't be. I used ordinary masking tape. The dye was a generic brand I picked up a year earlier at Corvette Expo in Knoxville.

Thanks and Zip web site was very informative. Note they sell vinyl paint in spray can as well as rubber boot which I also need. Seems these repo boots are thinner than originals. This is the second replacement. Thanks again.
