Thanks again to all. Looks like a stock rebuild is what I need to do! Mark

        Re: High Compression Rebuild?

        Mark,
I have a 69 Z/28 with a stock "30-30" cam and stock everything else engine. The only non-stock items are the Comp cast steel roller tip rockers and some head modifications. The compression ratio is a true 11:1 measured with a burette. It runs just fine on pump gas. I use Duke's recomended manifold vacuum canister and a recurved distributor.

One of the keys is to make sure the piston deck is about .040" from the surface of the cylinder head with the piston at TDC. If you can juggle the head gasket thickness to achieve close to .040", it will help a bunch. Any closer than that and you risk slapping the head when the piston rocks over. Any less than that will diminish the quench effect as you move away from the head. The tight quench helps the engine to be less sensitive to fuel octane requirements.

Just one more data point for you.

        -Mark.
